Students who got into college this year had taken computer education classes at the high school level. The purpose of this study is to describe computer anxiety of first-year Ryujo students from two perspectives: comparison of the degree of computer anxiety with that of general university students, and investigation of the degree in relation to the accessibility to personal computers and the students' adjustment to college. In addition, the effectiveness of Ryujo computer education was examined. The college students (n=92) completed a questionnaire pertaining to their computer anxiety and their anxiety about college life on two separate occasions: once in April before the computer education classes began, and once in September when the class was completed. The ownership/accessibility conditions of computers were also measured in September. The results showed that: a) the students' way of using computers lacked in variety although many of the students have personal computers at home (ownership ratio of the personal computer is more than 90%), b) students' "computer avoidance" score was much higher than general university students, c) students who have access to computers had lower computer anxiety, d) the first-year students' "Computer Operation anxiety" in April was significantly related to their anxiety about college life (r=.23〜.39), but not in September, and e) computer education class lowered the score of students' "technology anxiety". |
