内容記述 | What is play? Where does play lead one’s imagination? How does play open up its world? The purpose of this paper is to clarify these questions from the speculative standpoint of Whitehead’s “philosophy of organism.” After raising the aforementioned qu estions in Chapter I, I examine the relationship between play and imagination, both of which Whitehead considers to be central functions within speculation. My arguments in Chapter II are based on Whitehead’s emphasis on the role of “play of a free imagin ation” in speculative philosophy. He suggests that play releases us from the constraints of the actual world to the free horizon of the imagination. In Chapter III, in order to consider the purpose of the world of play in the conflicting traits between t he trend of repeating what is familiar and the aspiration for novelty, I refer to Whitehead’s discussion about the contrast between the two conflicted aspects of the actual world, that is, the “creative advance into novelty” and the “conservative repetitio n of what is beloved.” In Chapter IV, I f ocus on symbolic activity in play. In the theory of symbolism, Whitehead notes that, by virtue of the symbolic reference, which he defines as “the imagined fusion of the two perceptive modes by one intensity of e motion,” we realize that thee actual world ias a meaningful one in which all items show their own values. I come to the conclusion that the characteristic of play exists in the symbolic superposition of images envisaged through imagination on the mere fac ts from the actual world. | |||||
